Hyundai Motors/KIA World Headquarters | Seoul |
| Key principle: cost savingsPhase one of the new Hyundai Motors/Kia World Headquarters building opened during the new millennium year. It was a stand-alone building shown in the forefront of the artist rendering on the link above. The fenestration products consist of clear glass with an aluminum spacer and polyamide aluminum framing. In 2005, the automotive giant’s growth necessitated additional facilities, and Hyundai began designing an expansion project that would more than double the headquarters’ campus. Realizing the advancements in technology available, the Hyundai Development Company requested a study in energy-savings for the new addition comparing the old system to a more advanced, modern product. The insulating glass units in the addition were to include low E glass and Warm-Light® by Azon warm-edge spacer. The aluminum framing material would also utilize Azon’s polyurethane polymer thermal barrier system with an inherent lower conductivity. Once the study was complete, results showed a heating and cooling savings for the new tower, with the enhanced technology, in excess of $91,000 annually. With the ever-increasing price of oil, the building owners have never been more satisfied with their decision, and the project continues to be a phenomenal model of ultimate energy efficiency in commercial construction.
